Stockformation Interview With David Wong David Wong's small cap Canadian tech stock picks 01/11/99 Stockformation.com had the pleasure of interviewing David Wong, who is a legendary technology analyst with Canaccord Capital. We spoke with David about a few of his favorite stocks, including Microforum [MCF.TO], Stockformation - Where do you see the market going in 2000, specifically Canadian small cap tech stocks? David - "With a majority of the Y2K issues behind us, I think that we are going to see some significant opportunities in the tech sector, particularly with all the pent up buying over the past two years for new hardware and software due to Y2K. From speaking to some people in the industry, there is excess money from fixing the Y2K bug which is to be allocated to new systems or upgrades of existing systems to handle the growth in e commerce." Stockformation - In November you maintained an $11 price target on Microforum [MCF.TO] which was based on projected fiscal revenues. Bearing in mind the current appetite for B2B and their enormous valuations, can you see Microforum moving even higher? David - "There is a potential for it to go higher as my projections were based on my projected revenues of $43 million on a fully diluted basis for f2000. That's my twelve month benchmark and it may well exceed eleven dollars due to developments and acquisitions and moving into the US market which is really a key factor here." Stockformation - What is the significance of yesterday's announcement of a deal with evedent? David - " I think that if you look at the past announcements concerning CALMS, you can see that they are breaking into the US market. The US financial services industry is a highly fragmented marketplace and that is where MCF is targeting their CALMS solution. The signing of evedent verifies the value added service that CALMS brings to a financial services company." Stockformation - How significant is a NASDAQ listing and the increased US investor awareness that will come with it, for a company such as Microforum? David - "I think that its importance is twofold. First, for brand awareness in the US; I think that Microforum would have significant appeal to the US investors due to the fact that it is the only Canadian company on Microsoft's DNS E commerce Advisory Board and that they are expanding into the US. I think that in itself brands Microforum in a different light from all the other solutions providers, whether Microsoft or not. Second, the size of the US investor base is at least 10 times what we have in Canada and their knowledge of the technology and Internet space is also stronger. This has the potential to give MCF a much more diverse investor base and distribution between retail and institutional shareholders along with a higher valuation. Stockformation - Microforum announced a string of contracts and initiatives in 1999, which do you think was the most important and why? David - " They are all significant. There is not one that is not significant. All of the companies that they acquired bring aboard new strengths and also compliments Microforum's existing infrastructure. In order for you to be able to offer a complete solution provider you not only have to offer robust and creative website design work but also be able to integrate the front and back end solutions. One of the biggest problems in designing an ecommerce solution is the integration of existing and legacy back ends like Oracle and UNIX. Frameworks for example has a strong expertise in working with Oracle and they were key in the integration of the CALMS solution for Newcourt Credit."
