John - RE: "Your statement proves my point, they buy brands they have heard of and trust, and Intel fits that category. AMD and Athlon don't."

Well, retail notebooks must come from a different planet because AMD has led Intel in marketshare from June - September. (I don't have any newer data.)

"So what exactly is it that sells computers?"

Salespeople.

Seriously. The average new computer buyer who doesn't know much about computers and doesn't know much about Intel or AMD or Compaq or HP asks the salesperson their opinion and use that input as part of their decision.

Apple is a superb marketer, with a vastly over-priced, incompatable product. Do you or anyone on this thread think that they have a superior product to AMD or Intel? Yet they are a leader in market share.

John, Apple is many things but in market share, its only a niche player.
