CDMA in Vietnam.....

SK Telecom To Set Up Cell Service in Vietnam
For the first time in the industry, Korea's digital cellular phone expertise will be exported. SK Telecom said Monday it will be providing Korean-made CDMA (code division multiple access) digital cellular phone services to Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam, beginning February 2001. SK, the largest cellular carrier in the country, said that mobile phone technology being exported to other countries has been hitherto unprecedented.

While several exports of mobile telephone equipment have been made to Australia, this is the first time that a package export, including phone systems and software, has been made. To move ahead with the service, SK Telecom plans to set up a joint venture with LG Information and Communications in a ratio of 55:45, with SK as the majority partner. This company will then establish a Vietnamese joint venture with Saigon Postel. An official at the Ministry of Information and Communication said that the SK Telecom deal will bring in more than US$10 million in royalties for the operation and technology of the cellular phone system for the next five years.

Slacker,

Great news from Korea. Where is Toyota, Honda and Nissan's PR of using CDMA phones on their future car models?

Thanks for the message.

Regards,

Brian H.

I posted this over on the Yahoo board in response to a question by The Rich Janitor....The 4.8m Korean sub number might be a little shaky. I always get surprised when I find out that people might actually read what I write <g>.

I posted the 4.8m new Korean sub estimate over on the SI board....looking at it now I'm not sure if I should have posted it (or at least should have added a lot more caveats). I come across a lot of numbers and will sometimes wait until I find a source to back up my conclusions when I'm not sure.....

Here's how I found the number....warning, I am a number's freak.

I found the following article on-line....in it they state the following.

chosun.com

"The ministry estimates that the nation's landline telephone subscribers will rise to 23 million, up 6.3% from last year, in contrast to 30.76 million wireless communication subscribers, up 14.7% over last year"

This implies that Korea ended up with 26.8m CDMA subs at the end of this year (analog has been phased out). I then went to the SK Telecom home page which has a monthly subcriber count. Unfortunately it only goes upto Oct. '99 right now.....

sktelecom.com

It shows that at the end of Sep. '99 Korea had 21.9m CDMA subs....so a total of 4.8m subs gained in the 4th quarter.

The 4.8m seems high to me too....does anyone know if Korea experiences the same kind of Christmas shopping season that we do?
