Telstra says in broadband content talks
MELBOURNE, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Telstra Corp Ltd said it is in talks with a major global broadband content supplier, sparking speculation Australia's dominant telecommunications group was negotiating with high speed Internet access firm Road Runner.

Telstra is seeking alliances with content suppliers to help its push to grab a big share of new high growth data markets.

"We are in significant discussions with a major global broadband content supplier," managing director Ziggy Switkowski said in a speech delivered at a conference in the United States on Wednesday.

Adam Spowers, analyst at HSBC Securities, said Road Runner was a possible candidate. Telstra declined to comment.

Road Runner, which provides Internet access over high-speed cable networks, is a joint venture between a number of media and technology groups, including Microsoft Corp , Compaq Computer Corp , MediaOne Group and Time Warner Inc . Telstra's major rival, Cable & Wireless Optus Ltd , has already teamed up with Road Runner competitor ExciteAtHome to offer its broadband service.

Switkowski also said in the speech Telstra was studying high bandwidth mobile services on both its GSM mobile network and its Code Divisional Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile network.

"We are ... contemplating trials early this year, with a view to rolling out late in the year or early next year," he said.

Switkowski said the company was aiming to top up its CDMA spectrum holdings in the auction starting on January 24.

"This will allow us to offer a growing level of data services without squeezing our current voice services," he said
