We would be able to read, but not write this value. I could then make a request to a service at the directory to transfer some amount of funds from my "balance" to your "balance". It would verify that the funds are there, and then subtract from my "balance" and add to your "balance". If, when I join the directory, I send a check or wire money to the "directory" owners, they add to my "balance" ...
