In my experience, elderly is as follows:

if you are under 12 - anybody over 20 is elderly
teenager - over 30
in college - over 40
in twenties - over 50
thirties or fourties - over 60
fifties - over 70
sixties - over 80
70 or above - ten years older than you are.

My friend who is 101 doesn't consider himself elderly yet.

I totally agree but the problem was that I was mixing the true definition of elderly - which really is wrt age only - with those that receive SS and Medicare benefits... and those can start at age 62.
