Skeeter,

Drugs for the masses... But the free entertainment isn't really. If you want free net access, you pay by having to look at all sorts of ads. I suspect it's pretty close to subliminal, but this is a legal form. You get the nice flashing banners with a message that slips past your guard because you're concentrating on something else.

Some people are going to take that and some won't. By the way, the idea of advertisements paying for a ``service" isn't new. A lot of people get ``community newspapers" that are paid for solely by advertising dollars. We get one each week.

What you really have to look at is the market those ads are targeting. When you see Crest Toothpaste all over the place, you know it's really penetrated. As long as it is a lot of ads for brokerages and fine wine, it's still only a small segment of the population. And believe me, the advertising agencies *know* who're watching. They're pretty sophisticated and this is big business.

Cheers, Torben

P.S. Advertisements are paying for SI for a lot of us since we joined back when it was free. I really wonder how many *paying* subscribers they have....
