Dave, there is a tremendous momentum throughout "all" businesses, from the most stodgy and conservative, to the bleadingest at the edge, to become dotcomicalized as soon as possible. Damn the torpedoes and the SLAs, is their oft heard battle cry, these days.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see a Yahoo! take a run at a top five brokerage or bank and be embraced by the open and waiting arms of management and their boards of directors. Pop pop pop.

Pieces of "synergy" surely exist, but there are also pieces with a negative contribution going forward--jagged edges that just can't be forced to fit the mold. Those have to be tagged and bagged.

Then tag and bag them they will.

You're thinking far too lucidly here. Stop for a moment and think about what I stated above. There are middle and senior level managers who will be measured or removed on the basis of how fast they make dotcomical happen. They hardly have the luxury of being objective about these things. Their mission is an urgent one, and that is to make all things that wear the company logo dotcomical ones, now.
