hello Frank, by 'forward looking compatibility with backwards looking terminal gear', do you mean that the fibre pulled into the living room would not be compatible with today's tv's or pc's?

i'd neglected the fact that of course the continuing drop in bandwidth cost means that the lowered cost of a fibre pull per gigabit plus the sudden universality of use will soon mean that the profitability will be obvious even to a mindset of vanadium steel. hence i think quite soon a cable consortium headed, perhaps by john malone, (or you and me?) does it. and then we'll have to close down this thread.

implicit in your and ms szelag's points on dispersion tells me that solitons will not be used for the last mile, because their very resistance to dispersion makes it difficult to tone them down for environmental safety.

you never responded to my query as to whether you think qtera's jump into solitons is a huge edge for nt.

all the best, jack
