jw,

thanks, I think that's what I need...I'll dig into what you've written later.... I think my problems in the past was not copying those hidden files.

other problems seem to be...I still only have very old dos disks when installing, then run into version problems....when formating and getting to win98....I quess I need new dos installation disks? I ran into this problem the last 6gb hhd I tried to format and partition. I upgraded win98 from one of the earliest win95 full install.

Best,

Jeff

Go to a command prompt and run FDISK. Set the new drive as a primary partition. Reboot and format the new drive with the s switch i.e. Format D: /S (if D is your new drive).

If you don't have an emergency start up diskette, make one now from CONTROL PANEL - ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS - CREATE START UP DISK.

Select START - RUN and type in the OPEN field, XCOPY C:\*.* /E /H /K /R /C D: and click on OK. The switches are: /E copies directories and subdirectories even if empty. /H copies hidden and system files also./K retains the files attributes on copy. /R overwrites read only files. /C continues copying even if errors occur. When copy is done shut down system.

my drives are C D E....F is my Cdrom, C,E are now on my primary drive(1) and D is my 2nd drive. I never figured out why my second drive didn't become E?

when I added the 2nd drive the programs I had on my 2nd partition(D) of drive 1 became lost(shortcuts couldn't find etc.) because after adding the 2nd drive the computer starting reading it as E??? And drive 2 became D???

How can I avoid these problems this time?

Best,

Jeff

>>> Go to a command prompt and run FDISK. Set the new drive as a primary partition. Reboot and format the new drive with the s switch i.e. Format D: /S (if D is your new drive). <<<<

I've removed my #2drive and installed my new drive in it's place. Looking at my file manager I see C and D partitions on Drive 1. I'm not seeing Drive 2? So I'm not sure what to use as my Format D?/S, E is now my CDrom... it used to be F, and D used to be the 1st partition on my 2nd Drive. So D became E on Drive 1. EDIT: OK, I'm still not seeing the new drive? Even in dos...The Bios recognises it. but I have it as my Secondary slave because of my ribbons, this shouldn't make a difference? should it...that's how I had my old #2drive installed. My CDrom is the primary slave....if I have to I will try to switch???? I guess I have to....doing that

I guess I'll shut down and start in DOS, and D: dir...and see if I have directories....I want to be sure to format the right drive.

After I copy the C partition do I repeat this process for E partition...I'm assuming D will become E after I format my new drive.

so I guess this is what I'll be doing:

Select START - RUN and type in the OPEN field, XCOPY E:\*.* /E /H /K /R /C D:

I guess I forgot to go to FDISK first....I haven't done this in awhile....

OK...Drive 2 now is D partition....

After I copy the C partition do I repeat this process for E partition...I'm assuming D will become E after I format my new drive.Which it has.

so I guess this is what I'll be doing:

Select START - RUN and type in the OPEN field, XCOPY E:\*.* /E /H /K /R /C D:
