CIENA TO PROVIDE OPTICAL SOLUTIONS IN THE
GLOBAL CROSSING NETWORK BUSINESS EDITORS
LINTHICUM, MD.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--JAN. 20,
2000--CIENA CORPORATION (NASDAQ: CIEN) TODAY
ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL SUPPLY

LINTHICUM, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 2000--CIENA Corporation
(Nasdaq: CIEN.O) today announced that it will supply intelligent optical
transport solutions for the Global Crossing (Nasdaq: GBLX.O) network.
Under an existing contract with Racal Telecom, which was acquired
by Global Crossing in November, the carrier has purchased CIENA
MultiWave Sentry(TM) systems for the expansion of its UK network to
support regional and international Global Crossing customer traffic.
"Our strategy is to significantly accelerate the availability of
high-speed data services to corporate customers, and rapid
provisioning is essential for meeting our customers' expectations,"
said Bob Falconer, director of networks for Global Crossing in the UK.
"The software intelligence that CIENA builds into its systems enables
us to automatically scale the network and turn-up new routes. To us,
that means getting service to customers faster than ever."
Proprietary SmartSpan(TM) software embedded in each of CIENA's
optical transport systems automates span provisioning and management
for real-time bandwidth delivery. CIENA's optical networking
intelligence enables carriers such as Global Crossing to speed their
time-to-market for valuable data services while dramatically pushing
down network operations costs.
"With our philosophy of providing customers with increments of
capacity on demand, we believe that a faster response time is required
to satisfy growth in network traffic, and CIENA's solutions help us
meet this challenge," Falconer said.
"Making further network enhancements with CIENA solutions is the
latest move in Global Crossing's drive to become the worldwide leader
in data, voice, Internet and e-commerce services," said Patrick
Nettles, CIENA's president and chief executive officer. "We're pleased
that CIENA is a part of that strategy. The value that we bring to the
network will be measured not only in capital and operations savings,
but also in helping Global Crossing maximize its opportunities within
the vast market for data services."
With CIENA LightWorks(TM), a next-generation intelligent network
architecture, CIENA is giving a competitive edge to carriers around
the world by helping them transition from complex legacy networks,
thereby significantly reducing future network operations costs.
LightWorks extends integrated capabilities in optical transport, core
switching and multi-service access technologies through embedded
software intelligence across the optical network.
