RIck, I cannot agree that RDBMS are becoming commodities. At the PC, standalone level, that is certainly true. At the mission-critical and/or enterprise level, that is not the case at all. ORCL is the Gorilla there and commands high margins as a result.

Now, we do see MSFT making significant efforts to raise its capabilities to meet the needs of mission-critical/enterprise level customers. MSFT has many faults, still, preventing the completion of that vision, not the least of which is that SQL Server only runs on Windows servers. ORCL runs on just about every server platform.
