qwave,

That is where GM is headed - hands free phone access for calls & for internet access Et. Al. See post # 62028

FWIW, GM plans on offering this service to other auto manufacturers. Unfortunately it is not available for cars already on the road. IMO, the MOT/IBM telmatics deal could be offered in that manner.

q*wave,
This morning I almost got push off the road by some idiot driving a Mercedes who was talking on his phone and not focusing on the fact that he was moving into my lane while I was right next to him.
Who are you calling an idiot? Was that you in the Yugo? And another thing, you moved into my lane. Still more, get a real car if you want to get noticed.

Rest assured, it's only a matter of time. If they can sue tobacco companies for cancer, and gun mfg for murder, they will soon be going after Nokia, Qualcomm or Radio Shack for traffic accidents.

All you folks, actually idiots, that use a cell phone while driving please think about getting a
hands-free kit. This morning I almost got push off the road by some idiot driving a Mercedes who was
talking on his phone and not focusing on the fact that he was moving into my lane while I was right
next to him. I am sick of these folks.

QC makes an excellent HFK that has voice recognition support. I love it

I will go one more step. Just pull over and talk as much as you need.
I think if DWI is illegal, so should talking/cellphoning and driving be. In one case you lack control involuntarily and in the other voluntarily.

It is my understanding that some states are considering legislation that would make it a violation to drive while taking on a cell phone. I think its only a matter of time before the insurance industry steps in such that if two people are in a collision and one of them is talking on a phone at the time of impact, the phone talker will be held the guilty party.

In the past year I have run the same red light 4 times intentionally rather then get hit from the rear by some jerk yacking on the phone and not realizing the light turned red. Its a rural area so there are not many lights, but one of these days when I am totally stopped at the light and some joker comes barreling down on me at 50 mph+ and does not hear my horn, I'm not going to be able to merely run the light to avoid getting in an accident [because traffic will be going the other way].

Before Christmas I was out shopping with my neighbor, driving on I-95 during rush hour, when her phone rang. Instead of watching the traffic, she started looking on the _floor_ feeling around for the phone. I quickly said I would try to find it but man oh man, we swerved into the left lane and almost side-swiped another car.

I might hold shares of QCOM and see a lot of positive value to owning a cell phone, but phones in cars drive me nuts--too dangerous for other drivers on the road. People chatting on the phone while they drive can be just as dangerous as people driving drunk.
