The best performer was the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index On the TSE, declines exceeded advances 570 to 536 as only half of the TSE's 14 stock groups rose with the transportation sector up 3.90% to lead the advancers. The oil and gas group also supported Toronto's rise, adding 1.93%, due to oil prices rising as the Saudi Arabian oil minister said that market conditions don't warrant a rise in OPEC oil output. Banking stocks ended higher, with the group up 0.76% despite the widespread belief that the U.S. Federal Reserve is likely to raise interest rates at least 25 basis points at its February meeting. Ballard Power Systems rose 2.50 to 64.50 after a subsidiary entered into an agreement to develop a fuel processor for a one-kilowatt natural gas-fuelled fuel cell power generator targeted at the Japanese residential market. A hot market for biotech stocks and accelerated clinical trials for one of its drugs are the factors behind Micrologix Biotech's 49% rise in the past four trading sessions, a company spokesman said. Micrologix gained 0.45 to 3.95 Thursday. Axcan Pharma rose 0.35 to 7.15 after the company said it expects revenue for its first quarter ended Dec. 31 of about US$25 million, compared with US$7 million a year earlier.
