DRAM makers to cooperate on technology-Samsung
SEOUL, Jan 17 (Reuters) - South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co said on Monday it and five other leading chipmakers have agreed to cooperate in developing high-performance dynamic random access memory (DRAM) semiconductor technology.

Samsung said the five were Hyundai Electronics Industries Co , Siemens AG's unit Infineon Technologies, Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), Micron Technology Inc (NYSE:MU - news) and NEC Corp .

The new DRAM technology to be developed in the rare alliance between leaders in the highly competitive chip industry will target applications in 2003 and beyond, according to a statement released by Samsung in South Korea.

Developers anticipate the DRAM technology will pave the way for multiple cost-effective computing platforms of the future, Samsung said.

Under the agreement, developers will work together and with industry participants to develop the architecture, electrical and physical design, and related infrastructure for the advanced DRAM technology, it said.

Cooperation between developers and participants will help ensure the DRAM roadmap is consistent with microprocessor and system architecture evolution in a variety of future systems, it said.
