The big problem with Intel's earnings is not the one time charge but the fact that they started treating gains from sales in their investment portfolio (newly named "Intel Capital") as part of regular earnings. Without these gains they would not have "beaten" analyst estimates.

What is fascinating is that few analysts are focusing on this so far, and the financial press is almost ignoring it.

This kind of financial gymnastics is happening with alarming regularity. Another market favorite, GE has been doing it. The bulk of GE's profit increases lately have been coming from gains from sales of investments in its pension fund.
