ADR Report - Latin American market highlights - Jan. 28

By Ian Simpson

NEW YORK, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Latin American ADRs were softer
Friday, weighed down by worries about higher U.S. interest
rates.

Traders in ADRS -- American Depositary Receipts -- said the
Latin American issues were down in sympathy as Wall Street
slipped on rate jitters.

``It's nasty and it's nasty because the U.S. doesn't look so
good,' a dealer said.

The Bank of New York's index of Latin American ADRs (^BKLATAM
- news) was down 2 percent. The gauge has fallen 6 percent
since Jan. 18 but is up 39 percent since mid-October.

Traders said rate fears stemmed from a government report
Friday showing that the fourth-quarter U.S. employment cost
index rose more than expected.

The numbers showed the economy was growing faster than
forecast. They raised concerns that Federal Reserve would
boost rates to curb possible inflation when its policy-making
panel meets Tuesday and Wednesday.

Here are some highlights among Latin American market ADRs:

BRAZIL - Umbrella telephone ADR Telebras (NYSE:TBH - news)
was down 5-7/8 at 131-1/8 in composite trade.
