George,
I ordered a copy of the New Economy Watch. During the order processing, there's a statement about having immediate access to the most recent reports once the order is submitted online (password to be sent via email).

When this didn't happen, I sent an email inquiring about the matter. Two days later I received a reply indicating the order processing takes 2 - 3 weeks.

Is the "immediate access" typical, or is the 2 - 3 weeks?

Regards,
Barry Fowler

Mr. Gilder:
In your view, which company is the premier supplier of batteries for today's age of wireless devices? Valence (VLNC) has been referred to as the "Qualcomm of Batteries", given their critical patents in Lithium Polymer battery production which uses manganese rather than cobalt electrodes. They are supposedly supplying the batteries for Globalstar phones. Or are there better candidates in this field?

Thank You

P.S. -You are undoubtedly the "Qualcomm of Erudition"

George Gilder: Your brushing Harmonic (HLIT) aside is a surprise.

From what I know of the company it would seem to fit into your areas of interest a bit more that the side box discussion reflects.

HLIT has an interesting test going in delivering data over cable to improve two way data transmission, a satellite communication subsidiary doing some interesting things in Europe - for example. And the addition of DivCom from C-Cube broadens its potential.

May well become a major supplier to both AT&T's cable arm and AOL-Time Warner's "road runner". Suggest it is worth another look.

While your letter is most valuable for the broad discussions of technological trends, rightly or wrongly, your letter is now carefully examined under a microscope and every word weighed. That may be unfair but that is the real world now. The price of fame.

As a result your remark in passing about HLIT may damage that company. Doubt that was your intent.

Would appreciate any clarification you might care to make after some further checking.

Respect and best regards,

Chaz

Hi J.Fieb, That statement about HLIT from the Gilder report is the most inaccurate statement I have ever heard. HLIT is the most cutting edge company around. Lightwire is so advanced it eliminates the need for cable modems and allows for a low cost ethernet connection. HLIT's ability to work with digital video and MPEG is the best in the industry. It makes you wonder if there are other reasons for Gilder to report nonsense like this. Gilder hates TV/CableTV so maybe this distorts his view on companies from this industry or maybe he favors certain companies for reasons other than technology and their ability to execute. Maybe there is some kind of corporate/geographical/investment banking politics coming to play in the companies he recommends. It could be people hoodwinking him, too,I guess.

George,

Certain parties (to remain nameless) have inferred from your recent article in Forbes forbes.com that you may be predicting the imminent demise of Tellabs.

I regard TLAB as a premiere value company in the optical networking space, with such assets as Dr. Paul Green and his team originally from IBM Watson. Granted human capital is vulnerable because it may walk out the door. I also recognize that erstwhile leaders may be "imperiled from below".

Would you mind elucidating your thoughts on this fascinating company?

TIA,
Sam
