That just doesn't compute. I may be dense but the way I understand the way shorting works is like this. I call my broker to make sure they have available shares to short. They check and they do. These shares are "borrowed" from another account. This is what I was told.
They are not "borrowed" from someone selling their position & they are not borrowed on the open market. As the stock price drops from where I borrowed my shares, I pick my exit point, and wait for that number to hit. I then place an order to buy to cover. The shares I buy return to my broker. What have I missed? Or have I been misinformed by my brokerage house?
