MM for million is common in finance, probably for the reason you give. I have never seen BB used, but I suspect it was either a typo or ignorance.

MM, FWIW is to distinguish M (thousand) from MM (thousand thousand=million).....this is what I read in 1996. BB came into being simply because MM was already there for million.
