DELL is advertising the WebPC in Investor Business Daily today with a full page spread at $499 dollars.

How do you respond to this reality. It seems to be different than your Dimension comparison.

I still have not ruled out defective mentation...

why would a customer pay twice as much for a Dimension

The dimension line is seldom sold in a stripped down version. It is the line that first gets the newest processors and periferals. For that it gets a premium price. At least you could compare it to an Optiplex, the workhorse of the desktop line, but even then you're talking about a stripped down version and there is value in the fact that it could be expanded much more than the iPaq.
