Asked whether the Fed planned to raise margin requirements in order to curb rampant stock prices, Greenspan said the
central
bank was reluctant to change the rules it had had in place since 1974.

Margin requirements as influenced by the Fed, he noted, only affected smaller investors.

''There is no evidence to suggest that margin requirements have any effect on the level of stock prices,'' he said.
