Pacific Century CyberWorks and Japan-based Hikari Tsushin will announce a share swap today to further confirm their strategic partnership, according to market sources.
It is understood that CyberWorks will acquire a small interest in Tokyo-listed Hikari Tsushin and vice versa.

The share prices of both companies surged yesterday on expectation the deal will be announced at a press conference today.

Golden Power International Holdings soared 31.9 per cent to close at HK$18.40, while CyberWorks shares rose 7.8 per cent to HK$17.25 against the Hang Seng Index's 80.24 points drop.

Hikari Tsushin is joining forces with CyberWorks in an HK$839.06 million takeover of SAR-listed Golden Power International Holdings.

Yasumitsu Shigeta, president and chief executive officer of Hikari Tsushin, is today scheduled to hold a press conference with Richard Li Tzar-kai, executive chairman of CyberWorks.

It is believed Mr Li and Mr Shigeta will discuss the impact the deal will have on the region.

A CyberWorks spokesman declined to deny or confirm the rumours, but said an announcement would be made today, outlining the companies' co-operation plan.

Analysts said a share swap between CyberWorks and Hikari Tsushin would be logical as it would help both companies grow into leading information-technology flagships in Asia.

Such an agreement could also help CyberWorks roll out its satellite-based broadband Internet services to Japan through Hikari Tsushin's telecommunications networks.

In a related development, CyberWorks said yesterday that it would take a 5 per cent stake in Singapore-based broadband content developer Horizon.com, which is planning to list on the Singapore Exchange.

CyberWorks is scheduled to pay S$5.2 million (about HK$24.23 million) to subscribe for 2.78 million Horizon.com shares from the company's initial public offering.

Under the deal, CyberWorks will have an option to buy an additional 10 per cent stake in Horizon.com at a price to be agreed at a later date.
