ptanner, re:<Apple also lists capital gains in "interest and other income">

Here's Apple's latest press release for its 4Q earnings:
corporate-ir.net

For some reason I can't cut and paste from it, but line 10 clearly mentions the capital gains and the financial table has the three lines in order:
Operating Income....................49
Gain from sale of investment..42
Interest and other income......34

In Intel's report (17 pages long), intel.com
the first mention that gains from sale of investments were higher than expected is in paragraph number 35, but the amount of the capital gains is not disclosed there. No, we have to go 27 paragraphs later to find the amount of the capital gain.

Then, in the financial tables themselves at the bottom of the report, there is no disclosure whatsoever than the line item "Interest and Other" includes capital gains.

Not at ALL like Apple's disclosure. Intel is a weasel.

ptanner, I don't mean to jump on you particularly, but Apple's report clearly discloses the (rather large) capital gains in the second paragraph and the numerical tables show capital gains as a separate line item.

Intel does not.
