>>threatening among other things, to tax INCO for every year that it failed to develop the Voisey's Bay mine.<<

If Inco wants to just sit and wait out the province knowing we have a thirsty economy then that game can be played two ways. Such remarks are a part of the game. You want to wait then you too pay to wait. You want to get on with doing what you said you would do then we will negotiate the tax regiem. C'mon AJ that is politics and business.

OT - good one - diamonds sent to begium - some are looked after in NWT - but that was a deal that was worked on. The FL ore from Ungava bay is shipped to Norway. Ore from mexico gets sent to Philipines (to skirt environmental rules) but it cuts down the cost. If the mine doesn't produce - them they don't get any workers employed or paying taxes or fueling an economy or paying royalites to the gov't. So Tobin can sing and dance about how newf's are gonna get their payday - but $10 says - Tobin will be running his PM campaign out in the open before that happen's. Inco should still have to make a good deal - they don't get to take the cake - but if you look around the world - very few things get dug up, refined and sold in one place. Ask BC - the floundering natural resource economy that it is. Newf is touting ads about how well it did last year - but if Hibernia had not come on line - would the ads still be running? I would love to see the East Coast get it together and stand on it's own 2 feet so that separation doesn't mean that the East becomes 52nd state. Maybe in a couple yrs - this Inco thing will work out.
Taxing Inco for not mining is nuts. These guys still spend how many millions in Newf every year working on various aspects of the property. Starting to sound like the Manitoba gov't that told inco to start mining or else they would take it back, whihc really means - we need you to start work so we can get your taxes and employment going. NwfdldThe only reason that Newf could think of taxing for not working the property is that they need/want the money and are gonna get it even though they have done? to find and develop this resource?
still cost effective.
