1/13/00 - New microchip could threaten Intel - FT
LONDON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Silicon valley start-up Transmeta will launch a new low-energy-consuming microprocessor chip on January 19, challenging dominant U.S. chip maker Intel, according to a report in Friday's Financial Times.
The report said the chip -- the Crusoe Processor -- would be smaller than its rivals and consume one-tenth as much power but would still be powerful enough to run standard personal computer software.

International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) would make the Transmeta chips which could be on the market in the second quarter of the year, it added.

Mystery had surrounded the launch of Transmeta's first product. Its website flagged it with a cryptic note saying: "we rethought the microprocessor to create a whole new world of mobility."

Interest was further sparked by the involvement of Linus Torvalds, partner in Transmeta and founder of Linux computer operating system which could rival Microsoft's (MSFT.O) Windows.
