FTU <20,000 online brokerage customers >

OK. Does that make a case for some of these big banks buying up an online broker? I personally know that FTU has made a big push to get online broker customers in the last 4 months. They are charging $25 and have a clunky site. Seems they are failing to garner much success thus far? And thats from a huge base of clients that have their premier CAP Account which includes a brokerage account aspect. <CAP accounts increased from 430,000 in 1998 to 603,000 in 1999> I hear the online broker division has about 20 employees.

These numbers seem to suggest that the banks could very easily be in the market for an online broker sometime soon. Buying one now is going to be cheaper than waiting and trying to develop their own.
