A previous post on Elon stating that they were primarily in the building automation business prompted me to call a friend who is in the building automation business. I asked him what the deal with Lon Works was. He stated that Lon Works is becoming the standard and that they have crushed their main competitor BacNet. From what i understand, Lon Works is the technology in the automation business called the E-Bus. This is the two wire link that goes to every thermostat, valve, motor, compressor, light, pump and etc in a building. Via the E-Bus all the components in the building can communicate with each other. This information is then passed back to the front end system where operating decisions are made by a building management program and instructions are sent to the various devices via the C-Bus. A compressor or pump will be turned on or off via the C-Bus but will tell the front end what it's actually doing via the E-Bus. Honeywell, Johnson, Cibie, McQuay have adopted Lon Works to date with others sure to follow he feels. Carrier and Trane are still the major hold outs. Elon has certainly caught my interest after having this conversation, it's recent stock performance and recent news releases. My intial reaction was to ignore elon at first. I've seen too many smart houses that were dumber then dumb houses. Maybe things are changing. If they can pull off being the standard in home automation as it seems they are doing in building automation, a tornado may just start. I would have to actually see a smart house that actually worked as advertised first. I too am hesitant about my oven calling me at work during a busy day. The water at Elon beach is still too cold for me to jump in but i will keep sticking my toe in to see if it warms up enough to inch in. 100
