SA-RECRUITED MERCENARIES FUELLING WAR IN S. LEONE: REPORT
OTTAWA Jan 14 Sapa

A report released in Ottawa this week accuses Canadian mining firms of fuelling civil war in Sierra Leone
by liaising with South African-recruited mercenaries in order to gain access to the country's diamond
fields.

The report, on the role diamonds played in the Sierra Leone fighting, was sponsored by Partnership
Africa Canada and partly funded by the Canadian government.

It says Canadian mining firms DiamondWorks Ltd, Rex Diamond Mining Corp and AmCan Minerals
Ltd were involved, either directly or indirectly, in military activities in Sierra Leone. All three firms deny
this.

Ralph Hazelton, one of the report's authors, said Vancouver-based DiamondWorks was tied through its
London-based major shareholder, Tony Buckingham, to the South African mercenary organisation
Executive Outcomes and to Sandline, a military firm in Britain.

The Toronto-based Globe and Mail says Mr Buckingham has freely acknowledged acting as liaison
between South African mercenaries and governments that wanted their services.

The report also notes that AmCan Minerals bought AmSec International of South Africa, which is
involved with the security industry.
