Mike, I think I've seen where the permabears live. In Denali Park in Alaska is a patch of pines, right at the edge of the tree line,
called the "Drunken Forest". The roots are all above the permafrost layer, so the trees don't grow straight.


OK, you got to the botanist in me. Why can't the trees grow straight up, even with (assume) shallow roots? I have liquidambers, which the original owner planted in the lawn, get far too much water, therefore have shallow roots, but grow nice and straight.
