JAPANESE MOBILE PHONE SUBSCRIBERS UP 20% IN 1999
TOKYO - Mobile phones continue to make their way into homes
and offices throughout Japan in 1999, with subscriptions
jumping by 9.47 million, according to figures reported by
companies on Friday. At the end of December, a total of 54.1
million mobile phones were in use, a 20.2% increase from a year
earlier. More than four out of every 10 Japanese, or 42.7%, now
carry a compact telephone handset in their pockets, briefcases
or bags. Mobile phones are expected to outnumber fixed-line
phones by March.

The Japanese operators report their sub numbers every month....the breakdowns are usually published in a newspaper but I havent found them yet.
