Analyst Hikes View For Applied Materials' 1Q Orders Growth

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Advest Inc. analyst Timothy Summers raised his projection for first-quarter orders growth at Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT).

The supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment should report orders rose 15% sequentially or more in the quarter, or at a pace slightly above the growth of the fourth quarter, said Summers.

Summers said he had previously expected a 13% increase in orders for the first quarter. He said in a research note that some chip makers have "pulled in" orders to the first half of the year that were initially scheduled for the second half. Summers also cited Intel Corp.'s (INTC) announcement Thursday that it would have $5 billion in capital spending in 2000, up from $3.4 billion in 1999.

Applied is scheduled to report first-quarter results on Feb. 15. Company shares were up 9.1%, or 11 5/16, to 135 13/16 in Friday's trading as the semiconductor group rose in the wake of Intel's strong fourth-quarter results; trading volume for Applied was 15.3 million, compared with a daily average of 6.5 million.
