Data showing lower inflation helped the Dow Jones industrial average kick 140.55 points, or 1.2 percent, higher to a record 11,722.98. The Nasdaq composite index zipped 107.28 points, or 2.7 percent, ahead to 4,064.49, about 67 points shy of its record. Microsoft climbed $4.438 to $112.25 on word of Steve Ballmer's promotion to chief executive and expectation of a good profit report Tuesday. Boeing picked up $1.625 to $44 after acquiring a Hughes unit. Both stocks are in the Dow. Costco Wholesale traded for the first time after a 2-for-1 split, and the shares reacted well, trading at a record intraday high of $50.25 before closing up $1.563 to $49.063. Computer-software companies shined. Idaho's Extended Systems skipped $9.25 to $63.688. Onyx Software of Bellevue advanced $2.125 to $36. Numerous Internet Web site and business-to-business companies soared. Among them: Go2Net, up $9.188 to $88.188; InfoSpace.com, up $2.813 to $116; Primus Knowledge Solutions, up $10.875 to a record $71; and F5 Networks, up $5.063 to $98. Cellular Technical Services, a Seattle company known for providing data-processing software to the cellular industry, said it would add phone cards to its business. The stock vaulted 19.4 percent, up $1.625 to $10. Avista, a Spokane energy-services company, powered higher for the fifth straight session, adding $3.375 to $24.50. Shares were less than $15.50 a week ago, before the company said it would spin off two units, one Internet-related. Key Tronic, a maker of computer keyboards, said it would miss financial expectations. The stock slid 87.5 cents, or 20 percent, to $3.50. Information from Bloomberg News is included in this report.
