I agree totally with redwood and carepedeum 2000 regarding Lucent -- this is NOT where I'm putting my money. First, the accounting questions have been raised previously by several analysts -- these are NOT the concoction of short-sellers. While no one is concerned about illegality, several analysts are concerned that Lucent's "creative accounting" is responsible for much of their growth rate (which is not spectacular for a growth stock, to begin with). Second, while they have cutting-edge fiber optic technology, they are a behemoth company; the fiber optic division is a small component of their total business and they cannot profit from it the way purer plays such as Nortel (NT) and JDSU can.

Although LU may be cheap at these levels, there ARE reasons for this. It may not go down any further, but it will not come back quickly. Redwood is correct -- it may be a safe stock to purchase at these levels, but so is Caterpillar. They are more dynamic stocks to choose from.
