Chaz,

<< Just read that WAP is considered "temporary" or a "short term solution" or an "interim technology" by some >>

I have heard this several times out of the GSM community. The same individuals that state this qualify the statement by saying that the short window could be 2 to 3 years and that in that window 100's of thousands of handsets WAP enabled handsets will be deployed and of course since WAP is technology agnostic so this is CDMA as well as GSM mobiles and devices.

<< One of the concerns seems to be centered on that WAP now uses HDML which must be redone to HTML for internet usage. >>

That is definitely one of the concerns stated. Two versions of a web site must be created. If not the site cant be accessed by a device with the WAP microbrowser.

<< But isn't there a proposal to revise WAP to HTML? >>

There may be. I haven't kept up with WAP Forum proposals.

In addition ...

While currently the GSM SIM with SIM Tool Kit complements WAP and extends its functionality I have heard GSM spokesmen say that Java applets on a SIM, downloaded from a web site, and executed for a single use, will replace WAP. I am not WAP savvy enough to evaluate these comments.

Java on a SIM is brand new. TIM will be the first large mobile operator to exploit it. There is a very interesting contest for Java developers that has been going on for 6 months called SIMagine 2000. The finalists in this contest that has gathered a great deal of attention will demonstrate their Java applications at the GSM World Congress in Cannes, on February 2, 2000:

cp8.bull.net

I am under the impression that in TIM's initial implementation of Java SIMs that Java will replace SIM Tool Kit applications on the SIM but will work in conjunction with WAP.

<< is Nokia leaning on a weak reed - WAP? >>

I don't think so. The window for WAP as we know it today might be relatively short, but Nokia appears to be proliferating WAP servers all over Europe and I noticed in the Vodafone releases on their Internet vision this week there were lots of allusions to WAP.

... but then again, I'm not too WAP savvy.
