I agree; I didn't really mean that she just invented it, either because she wanted attention or because she was protecting someone. Always possible, but I think unlikely. It's more probable that she's just an impressionable and slightly hysterical person.

Apart from "beginning to shake" when she saw Jim on TV, she evidently also called the cops at two in the morning. Neither of these are what most people would do. If someone in your community is murdered, unless you knew the person well your reaction would probably be a mixture of shock (it could have been me!) and curiosity. Not screaming hysteria.
