Philip Morris to raise cigarette prices $0.13 a pack
The New York-based cigarette company, maker of the top-selling Marlboro brand, would not comment further on the price hike.

``The majority of this price increase is going to offset higher settlement payments in 2001,' analyst Bonnie Herzog of Credit Suisse First Boston said, referring to the industry's $206 billion Master Settlement Agreement with 46 states in November of 1998.

``And keep in mind there is a good amount going to the bottom line,' Herzog added.

Philip Morris raised prices $0.18 per pack in August -- a move that was quickly followed by the industry. Analysts expect other cigarette companies, namely R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc. (NYSE:RJR - news) and Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp, a unit of British American Tobacco Plc. (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BATS.L), to do the same with this latest price hike.
