<< GO TITANS!>>

Mark,

you're on the wrong page here, everyone is rooting for Peyton Manning, the good old boy from TN, and his Colts.

DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS Fans Torn in Tenn.
By Joe Gergen. STAFF WRITER

There's a schism among the citizens of Tennessee apart from the standard divisive elements of race, creed and economics. The culprit is football, normally a unifying force in a state that supports its university team, the Volunteers, with a passion approaching fanaticism. But a game in Indianapolis on Sunday is testing the loyalties of households from Mountain City in the extreme northeast corner to Memphis in the southwest.

It features the Titans, a professional team that moved into a new stadium in Nashville this season, established itself in public consciousness by posting a 13-3 record and then broadened its fan base by winning a wild-card game in miraculous fashion. The entire state has rallied around the franchise in the aftermath of a successful kickoff return suitable for sandlots against the Buffalo Bills last weekend. But now Tennesseeans face a dilemma because the team that stands between the Titans and a berth in the AFC Championship Game is the Colts, whose quarterback remains a hero two years after completing his college career at UT.

Peyton Manning's popularity is such that a month ago, with the Titans on the verge of attaining their first playoff berth, the Fox network affiliate in Knoxville (site of the university) elected to telecast a game between the Colts and Redskins instead of the Falcons at Tennessee. Rick Lipps, the general manager, explained that the calls to the station favored Manning by a rate of 20-1.

Indeed, a campus street has been named Peyton Manning Pass, and he continues to appear in television ads for a Knoxville hospital. And while 180 miles separate that city from Nashville, the man is fondly remembered in the Titans' backyard as well, not only for his talent, his modesty and his manners but also for the fact he passed up a chance to be the top pick in the NFL draft after his junior year to play another season for the Vols.

The Tennessean, Nashville's major newspaper, invited the public to express its sentiments on its web site under the heading, "Who Are You Cheering For?" As of noon yesterday, there were 116 entries, several of them profanely questioning the judgments of others. While all of this may have been flattering to Manning, he has chosen to distance himself from the issue, a position cushioned by the location of the game.

"We're playing at home, and I'm glad about that," the quarterback said in a national conference call on Wednesday. "Obviously, it's an interesting story for the fans and the media. But it's really something I can't get into . . .

Nobody on the Tennessee Titans cares where I went to college, and no one on the Colts cares, either." What impresses players on both teams is that, in only his second pro season, Manning passed for 26 touchdowns, helped the Colts reverse their 3-13 record of the previous season and earned a selection to the Pro Bowl. Manning said a lot of his friends at Tennessee have become major Titans' fans and "that's the way it's supposed to be." But he will have no shortage of supporters himself in the Volunteer State on Sunday, although to public officials neutrality was the best strategy. Victor Ashe, the mayor of Knoxville, said in a statement that he "would not want to write my political obituary" by taking sides. Now there's a politician with a future.

Was heartsick for you yesterday. I know how it feels though...seems like I remember we got shut out this season in a very painful, embarassing game. <g> Now, let me see if I can remember who it was skunked us so bad. :)

I'm ready for 3:00 to roll around and get our game on the road.

GO TITANS!

E!
