Lucent Launches 11Mbps WLAN

nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com
Lucent Technologies has released a new wireless local area network (WLAN) solution, the WaveLAN is compliant with the latest 802.11b high rate standard.

The 11-Mbits/s solution provides Ethernet performance but it is also compatible with the previous 2-Mbits/s version.

According to Lucent the solution is an integrated system of hardware and software that is designed to extend current wireless connectivity to an existing LAN, or enable the user to create a stand-alone network.

It consists of PC cards for use with mobile computers and an ICA or PCI card for desktop systems. It is compliant with other 802.11b branded systems and is designed to be compliant with the wireless ethernet compatibility alliance (WECA) wireless-fidelity standard. Lucent also recently teamed up with Apple computers to deliver AirPort, which provides ibook users with wireless Internet access.
