An interesting parallel to my folks, a few years younger but retired since the early 1990's. My Mom is a clever and dedicated Fidelity mutual funds investor. They keep some funds in cash to live off, but roughly 2/3 of their net worth has been in stocks the past 5-6 years.

They made 50.05% net return on their money in 1999. That follows earlier returns of 20-30% on a regular basis.

Imagine the difference that makes for a retired couple to GROW their nest egg by 30% in one year instead of just worrying about whether CD rates will be enough for them to buy a new refrigerator this year.

I am a firm believe that you have to trade and invest what the market gives you - not what you think or deduce its fair value SHOULD be. So many posters on SI have taken it on themselves to tell everyone else the market is WRONG. Then they tell you to go to cash and get ready for the crash.

Not many seems to have the balls to go short any more though.

The market itself is never WRONG. The way we try to play it is.

I think you hit the nail on the head, bt.

We're money mongers, give us the cash, we
won't have to depend on anyone and then we
can do whatever we damn well chose. <vbg>

At least that's what I've always thought.

I'm slightly younger than you and to tell you
the truth, have never thought SS would be around
when I retire. It would be nice (especially after
all the money I've given them) but not necessarily
likely. Show me the money.
