Has anyone looked into Nortel (NT) call options. The stock has been struggling even in the midst of tech rallies. The earnings are on January 25. I think either options in NT or BCE(owns 40% of NT) look pretty good. NT is around 95 right now with a high of 110 (i think). Considering its ever increasing focus in fibre optics, the stock might have a lot of steam going into earnings. It is doing very well compared to Lucent. Unfortunately due to earnings being after options expiration, only Feb calls look attractive---about 10 to 20 out of the money. Even January calls could be a good play around Wednesday as we might get a shot upward by the end of the week--- a more speculative bet. The Lucent blow up may have caused a lot of shorting on NT as well. Therefore, we could get an earnings runup which is also compounded with lots of short covering as well. As far as earnings go, it appears things are pretty good at the company. We should get a stock split as well even at this range. The company is in acquisition mode for small players in fibre optics and will do whatever it takes to help boost their stock price. One of the reasons JDSU keeps announcing stock splits is that acquiring smaller competitors gets a lot easier with rapidly rising stock price (great currency). BTW--if the earnings were this coming week, it would have already gone up much higher, IMHO.
