this problem has me stumped... i've always been able to open word documents from icons that i've placed on the desktop. suddenly they're taking real long to open (maybe 30 seconds). however, i can still open word in the normal fashion and at the normal fast speed by clicking start, programs, msword. all other programs with desktop icons open as always. it's just msword documents. i tried deleting the offending icons and creating new ones. didn't help. i tried rebooting, didn't help. the only thing i've introduced into my system since this began happening is a firewall (blackice) update. currently running win98. any thoughts/suggestions much needed and appreciated. [edit: i did just close down all blackice programs that were running and the problem was not alleviated] :) mark
