Novell invests $2 mln in Israeli start-up -- report
TEL AVIV, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Leading international content company Novell International (NasdaqNM:NOVL - news) has invested $2 million in Israeli start-up Business Layers, Globes Business Arena reported Sunday.

It is presumed that this is Novell's first investment in an Israeli start-up, forming part of a strategic alliance between the two companies, Globes said.

Under the agreement, Novell's representatives will officiate in observer status on the Business Layers Board of Directors.

Novell's investment in Business Layers is designed to offer business solutions related to its product -- the e-Directory, which is designated for Internet library management.

The agreement calls for Novell to offer Business Layers products to its customers while Business Layers will offer its customers the Novell product, Globes said.

Business Layers, founded a year ago, develops advanced services for business environments, based on Internet, intranet and extra-net technology.

Hello Perry -

I did notice the announcement but I've been busy this week so I did not have the time to formulate any thoughts.

Now that you mention it, it seems rather odd that Novell would feel the need to develop their own ASP service. Perhaps it's a good thing for shareholders - if they can acquire the services know-how in this fashion - adds alot of value to the company which traditionally can not compete in terms of marketing their products or solutions.

Perhaps this is just a way to jump start the marketplace - create your own ASP service to show off what you can do. Just like they did with MyRealBox.com - they showed ISPs that their internet mail product not only works well and scales but it offers more control over the system than previously thought (the no spam thing is GREAT!).

In the coming year I expect to see some ISPs using Novell Internet Mail Server (NIMS) if they haven't already. Expect to see more ISP related products (IMHO) as they begin to stretch their "network appliance" theory. I think that NIMS and ICS are just the beginning of these specialized servers.

Perhaps the JustOn deal is a parallel approach - you know - let's show them what we can do type of ASP then Novell can just sit back and respond to the inquiries!

Ok, much simplier than in reality but...

Regards,
Peter J Strifas

Just-On --- comments

Well let's put it this way, if you were building a digitalme server wouldn't you want to have the ability to allow people to store data files along with providing them email etc. Just-On is all of a six person company I believe. All they do is provide a network server repository for your data files. Not too different from what Novell does with file servers on small networks. So why not expand Novell's LAN forte to the internet in a VISIBLE WAY?

Its not like they are displacing other attempts to do the same thing. Its more like they are just getting themselves into the consumer mix. Here we are Novell, you have files you want to put into a space where they can be shared between your various internet computer sessions from different computer locations, well yes we do that.

Want to get at your data files wherever you are, well yes we do that. Were not directories originally invented to deal with data?
