Liberate-ion day for Next Level

BRIAN QUINTON

Broadband manufacturer Next Level will join set-top software maker Liberate Technologies to enable interactive TV and Internet-over-copper phone lines using very high bit-rate DSL.

The deal will integrate Liberate's TV Navigator client software in to Next Level's Residential Gateway 2000, a set-top box that gives many appliances, including telephones, TVs and personal computers, a simultaneous connection over DSL. Adding Liberate interactive software to the gateway will permit users to access the Internet at high speeds from either their PCs or their TV sets.

The agreement is "another step in a continuing program to allow our customers to cost-effectively deploy integrated broadband services over copper twisted pair," said Next Level CEO Pete Keeler.

Commenting on the announced deal, U S West President Joseph Zell said, "U S West is pleased with the strategic partnership between Next Level and Liberate, which will allow us to deliver advanced interactive services to our customers." U S West currently is field testing a system delivering converged voice, video and data services over VDSL in Phoenix.

The deal also will involve Next Level and Liberate in joint marketing efforts to mutual customers and in-building interest in their resulting technology from telcos worldwide.
