I am concerned about any shares I own being used to counter the long-term position I have taken in a company. It's akin to voting, I don't have a big bag of influence in terms of votes or power... but I do own what I paid for, and do not want anyone using my limited resources against myself. I guess you could call it a matter of principal. Imagine of most individual investors instructed their brokerages to not loan their shares to short sellers.

<<Don't worry about your shares contributing to "the shorters", unless you hold over five million shares, in which case you would not be asking this question.>>

Also... are IRA's invested in mutual funds protected from loans to shorts?

Zebra - My Prudential broker told me that I could purchase real estate within my IRA Account; I just had to pay for it entirely from within the IRA. Then any income would be inside the IRA and thus tax advantaged.

GBLX goes VPN!

biz.yahoo.com

I'm just curious as to whose Virtual Private Networking equipment GBLX is using. I suspect LU because of their past relationships. LU does offer a full suite of VPN products.

If it is Licent (Ascend division) supplying the VPN stuff, then we should all take a second look at HIFN, which makes the dual encryption/compression chips for the VPN market.

<<You cannot use margin in an IRA account. You cannot hold solid assets (gold and silver). I'm not sure about the trading of derivatives, ie. options, warrants, etc.>>

i'm not sure about margin (see my other post on the subject), but i do know that you can hold gold and silver in an IRA. you can also trade options. it may be that you aren't supposed to be able to do these things, but i've seen those two (gold and options) first hand.
