Hi Charles, RE: "I don't yet know enough about Transmeta to know if it is "joke""

I don't have an opinion on Transmeta (until I get the facts). However, someone had made a post which implied to me they were originally targeting something different than than what they are targeting now. So, this sort of gave me the impression they missed a core market and realigned to one of those "other" markets.

RE: "but I gotto tell you - I am dismayed by the comments of some analysts saying this is a threat to Intel and AMD."

The Financial Analyst's comments didn't contain any factual information to back up his position, so I wasn't able to concur with him. (If the Financial Analyst had alluded to something concrete like Martin did, then I would have gotten a bit interested. But even in the case to which Martin spoke to, aside from losing a target market, it's not a threat to the existance of either Intel or AMD in business totality).

Sometimes I think folks can get easily influenced and awed by "who" is on the team and "who" are the investors, (to which Transmeta has an impressive roster), rather than "what" the product is (we all get to find out on Wednesday).

Now, if folks from both Gartner and Dataquest conclude this is a killer product, then we all need to take a look. A Market Industry Analyst gives weight to all factors, especially the product (i.e. devil is in the details) and the competitive market environment (i.e. what is the market size or is there a "business twist"). So far, the Market Analysts seem to be alluding to a potential area of market opportunity (which I concur with), but whether Transmeta takes advantage of it, remains to be seen. [ And Scumbria, please clarify your comment about Transmeta's executables being modified by a sponsored virus. This certainly sounds like a minus. What do you think their performance is? ]

RE: "One has to be pretty disconnected from the goings on in this business to be making statements like that."

Yes, I don't think the Server (margins, margins) market would be replaced by Transmeta.

There, according to marketing officials, ``the world's first family of software-based smart microprocessors' will be unveiled and demonstrated.

Charles and thread;

What does the above statement in the Transmeta press release mean to you, and how and will the Transmeta chip be different from existing CPU's?
