DSP is used for number crunching. Nokia and their GSM groups cellular products like DSP
processor for specific reasons. QCOM however uses INTC's 286 chips to do number
crunching. Correct?

No.

All phones use a Control processor/DSP combo in their chipsets
========

QCOM currently use an in-house DSP for number crunching, and real time (i.e fast) control of the baseband stuff, like the search engine and rake receiver. ARM is also used for the protocol.

QCOM used to use an Intel processor for the protocol, but ditched it for the ARM.

NOK use TXN's DSP's in their 'phones for number crunching, and use an ARM in the same 'phones for protocol stuff (i.e. call control, user interface etc).
