All, I am betting that G* service will be a part of GM-BEL-GTE-VOD deal. This will be a part of good news that will be brought out by Mr. Schwartz when that 7 million is going on for sale. It really makes sense after confirming with Airtouch that all USA is now selling G* phone including west coast of North America as long as the whole system is going as claimed. GM Picks Bell Atlantic, GTE for Cellular Services (Update3) GM Picks Bell Atlantic, GTE for Cellular Services (Update3) (Updates with closing share prices in fifth paragraph.) Troy, Michigan, Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp. said it picked Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp., soon to be part of the U.S.'s largest wireless network, to provide a network to support its OnStar car-communications system. Terms weren't disclosed. GM will buy time on the companies' wireless networks and resell it to car buyers, giving them a nationwide cellular-telephone network and voice-based Internet access, along with current safety and security services. Bell Atlantic is buying GTE for about $85 billion. The combined firm will join its U.S. wireless operations with those of Vodafone AirTouch Plc. Expanding OnStar, which car buyers can choose as an option for a monthly fee, is part of GM's efforts to generate more revenue from the cars it sells. The automaker is seeking to install up to 1 million phones in cars and trucks this year, while the wireless companies are looking for new customers to offset declining prices. ``Motor vehicles are more than a method of transport, they are becoming mobile communications platforms that can keep motorists safe, informed and productive,' GM Chairman and Chief Executive John Smith said in a statement. Bell Atlantic shares rose 2 11/16 to 59 on the New York Stock Exchange, while GTE gained 2 1/8 to 68 1/8, and Vodafone AirTouch's American depositary receipts rose 4 1/8 to 57. GM rose 13/16 to 83 1/16, also on the NYSE. OnStar System GM wants to add online entertainment and personal services to OnStar, which combines a global positioning satellite system to track cars, mobile cellular phones and direct links to operators at a call center. OnStar lets drivers contact a 24-hour service center for directions, summon help in an emergency, track stolen cars and place phone calls on a hands-free cellular phone. Bell Atlantic says it will have 22 million U.S. wireless customers after it buys GTE and forms the U.S. venture with Vodafone AirTouch. AT&T Corp. is currently the largest U.S. wireless phone company with about 12 million customers. Bell Atlantic owns and operates the largest wireless network in the eastern U.S., a system in the southwest and a chain of retail outlets devoted to wireless voice, data and paging. GTE provides local telephone service in 28 states and wireless service in 18 states, as well as nationwide long- distance, directory, and Internet services. U.K.-based Vodafone AirTouch is the largest wireless phone company in the world. GM has said it will split a monthly fee for the OnStar service, which could generate $40 a month in revenue per vehicle. The automaker plans eventually to install the OnStar hardware in almost all of the 9 million vehicles it makes each year. Brian H.
