Bill,

others seem to feel that getting full speed cache on the AThlon will be quite helpful

It will help some, but will not do as much as the Coppermine cache did for PIII.

Bill, concerning the effectiveness of a full speed L2 for the Athlon.

There are benchmarks on the web in which the Athlon 750 with a 2/5 speed cache is compared to an overclocked Athlon 750 (really a 500 or 550) with a 1/2 speed cache, and maybe also a 1/3 speed cache. As I remember, the difference depended a lot on the benchmarks, but was sometimes a few percent.

It would be worthwhile for someone to estimate the performance of an Athlon with 100% L2 cache speed from these two data points, emphasizing the benchmarks in which the Athlon 750 is behind the Cumine 733.

Of course a true on-die cache would not only be full speed, but have lower latency. If anything the Mustang would be better than this extrapolation.
