Goldman Sachs Technology Research Picks Top 10 Themes for 2000

NEW YORK - Goldman, Sachs & Co. Global Technology Research team today announced its top ten themes for the year 2000. The team remains bullish on the fundamental outlook for the technology sector, and believes the following themes will drive its development and growth in the year ahead:

1. Spending on technology should accelerate, following a great year in 1999. <<Easy one for NOVL in directory and caching space sector>>

2. Demand for bandwidth should continue to explode. <<Continued opportunity for NOVL as they further penetrate ICS and need for directories to manage many devices>>

3. Stronger technology capital spending should be fueled by more balanced global economies, as Europe strengthens and as Asia rebounds. <<NOVL has been laying great groundwork for growth in Europe and Asia, which is its strongest areas. It's the US where it needs to shore up sales>>

4. Demand for servers, storage, software and services should escalate due to the massive increase of online data. <<e.g. need for NOS w/ software to manage data etc. via directories == NOVL>>

5. Web appliances should begin to proliferate in 2000. <<ditto as in bandwidth, ICS and NDS = NOVL>>

6. Online commerce should ignite demand for higher levels of system reliability, availability, and scalability. <<This is the critical area where NOVL's shines if they execute in due fashion. Introduction of I-chain to go along with their reliable, available and scalable directory>>

7. We expect software to be increasingly thought of as a service and to be accessed over the Web. <<New area of growth discussed by NOVL>>

8. The radical pace of technology change should accelerate demand for outsourcing. <<e.g. Whitman-Hart deal by NOVL.>>

9. A new generation of enterprise computing should emerge that leverages Internet technologies, facilitating business-to-business (B2B) collaboration and streamlining supply chains. <<I-Chain to the rescue! >>

10. The acquisition phenomenon will likely be white hot, with companies using high stock valuations as a strategic weapon to extend their markets. <<NOVL uses their cash flow strategically for acquisitions without diluting shares outstanding. If stock grows tremendously, they could go this route.>>

<<Any others thoughts? JIMHO, QuadK>>
